Program Manager's Corner

In the September 2003 issue of the Colorado LTAP Newsletter, we mentioned a couple of grant/award programs that were available for local agencies.

One of those was FHWA’s “National Roadway Safety Awards Competition” ---conducted to recognize outstanding safety achievements in using Federal-aid Highway, Federal Highway Safety Program, State and/or Local, and Private sector funds. Entries are rated on their innovation, effectiveness, and efficient use of resources on projects that serve as models for all agencies to emulate as we strive to maintain the safest transportation system possible. Winners are chosen in three categories: Safety Improvements, Operational Improvements, and Program Planning, Development & Evaluation.

Colorado LTAP would like to congratulate the Boulder County DOT's Colorado Bike Lane/Shoulder Initiative for being chosen as one of just five winners in the “Safety Improvements” category. The locally funded grassroots initiative was found as one way to address the safety needs of areas that receive a smaller share of limited Federal and State funds than other more populous areas. Their entry was based on a developed and tested policy of paving 3-foot asphalt shoulders for bike lanes whenever asphalt overlay projects were completed.

Congratulations again to our local winners! We hope this encourages more of you to showcase your work and apply for future awards and grants. For more detailed information regarding this project, contact Larry Matel Boulder County Transportation Department, P.O. Box 471, Boulder, CO 80306, or email: lmatel@co.boulder.co.us.
